01 - Started as an organic farm in 1972, we grow vegetables, fruit and Christmas trees on 60 acres, providing sustainably-grown food to mixed-income neighbors at reasonable prices.

Work to be done includes:  starting seeds, planting, weeding, plasticulture use, pruning apple and pear trees, working with Christmas trees, harvesting, packing, marketing at farmers’ markets, assisting with tours of the farm.  To learn more, see articles by farmworkers at http://www.takoma.com/archives/copy/2003/05/farmworker.html.

We need two apprentices 5/1-8/1 and two apprentices 8/1-11/1 to be paid $1500 including room and board, or 5/1-11/1 for $4,000 including room and board.  Full-term employees last year netted $7,000+.  Workers decide on hiring (and firing), hours, etc.

Accommodations include new house and two new cabins with modern bathrooms and kitchen; everyone has his/her own room.

Apprentices get 1 1/2 days off.  There are great opportunities for hiking and biking; the C&O canal is ten miles away.  We are situated in a rural area two hours from Washington, Baltimore and Pittsburgh.  The river through the farm is swimmable and the surrounding area is undeveloped and beautiful.
