Maine

01 - We are small family goat farm and dairy, licensed grade A, producing milk, cheese and yogurt, operating on less than an acre.

Daily chores would include am and pm milking and feeding duties.  Cheesemaking duties would follow milking.  Other duties would include soapmaking, garden work, and farmers' market attendance.  All duties/chores will be on rotation.  Some meals and meal duties will be shared.  We are also laying the groundwork for a local food-buying club giving an opportunity to work with other local farmers for deliveries/ordering, etc.  Special projects include a new permanent fance and a new barn.

We're looking for one or two apprentices as early as April and as late as October; June, July and August are required.

Accommodations are rustic: definite tenting, possible small camp, sun shower, outdoor toilet with indoor toilet use also.  Most meals shared and small stipend offered.

Apprentices will be learning by working closely with family members  and doing.  Many books are available and questions are always welcome.  We also have a wealth of information from other farms.  

  

02 - Farm is 2+ acres of certified organic, mixed vegetables and herbs, eggs, lambs and other animals. We do farmers' markets, a CSA, and wholesale to coops and natural food stores.

We are a small diversified farm so duties will change daily but include:  sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing/packing, attending farmers' markets, etc.  Special projects may include: completing trials and building projects.

We'll need one apprentice from March 1st  to October 31st.

Housing is a private, 24' RV set near a beautiful stream.  Stipend is $125/week including lunch on workdays.  Farm produce and eggs are available free for the remaining meals. Workweek is 45 hours with one day off.

Mid-coast Maine offers many opportunities for exploration.  Our stream can be enjoyed for wading, fishing and cooking out.  The apprentice will be involved in every aspect of our farm operation, giving confidence in running his/her own farm.

  

03 - This is a bakery and farm specializing in whole-grain baked goods produced from flour and grains grown on Maine farms.

Duties include but are not limited to: harvesting wood for the oven, preparing sourdough starters and dough, small carpentry projects, washing dishes, delivering products to stores, organic gardening for our own sustenance and for use in the bakery, and working at farmers' markets and fairs.  In addition to learning about firing the oven, sourdough and the intricacies of working with whole grain flour, you will have the opportunity to participate in building a wood-fired oven.

We need one full-time apprentice starting May, 2009 through September, 2010 (training May, 2009 through September, 2009, taking over lead apprentice position in October), and one part-time apprentice June, 2009 through September, 2009.

Accommodations for full-time position are a 12x16-ft. cabin with loft, outhouse, outside shower, all meals, during training $200/month, after training $500/month.  Accommodations for part-time position are army tent, outhouse, outside shower, all meals, no stipend.
